Stainless 17-4 PH®
17-4 PH® is a martensitic precipitation hardening stainless steel offering high strength and hardness along with moderate corrosion resistance up to 600˚F. It has good fabrication characteristics and can be age hardened using a single heat treatment in the 900-1150˚F temperature range. This grade has been used for a variety of oil field and chemical process equipment, as well as fittings and fasteners.
In addition to its strength and corrosion resistance, 17-4 PH® is valued for its excellent dimensional stability, allowing it to maintain roundness and size through heat treatment and machining processes. This stability makes it a reliable choice for precision components where tight tolerances are required. The alloy’s ability to achieve high strength in combination with consistent geometry has led to its widespread use in applications such as pump shafts, mechanical seals, oilfield equipment, and aerospace components, where both performance and repeatability are critical.
17-4 PH® is available in a range of heat-treated conditions, allowing properties to be tailored to specific application requirements. Higher strength conditions provide increased hardness for wear resistance, while lower strength conditions offer improved toughness and resistance to stress corrosion cracking. This versatility gives engineers flexibility in balancing strength, toughness, corrosion resistance, and machinability, making 17-4 PH® a dependable solution across a variety of demanding environments.
