A-286 is a Ni-Cr austenitic precipitation-hardened iron-based alloy and one of the original superalloys. It is widely used in applications requiring high strength and corrosion resistance up to 1,300°F (704°C), while also maintaining useful properties in cryogenic environments. Its relatively low alloy content and cost-effective formulation make it a practical choice for a wide range of high-performance applications.
In addition to its temperature capabilities, A-286 offers an excellent balance of strength, oxidation resistance, and fabrication characteristics, making it well-suited for components exposed to prolonged thermal and mechanical stress. It retains mechanical properties over a wide temperature range and performs reliably in oxidizing environments where both durability and environmental resistance are required.
A-286 is typically produced by vacuum induction melting (VIM), followed by vacuum arc remelting (VAR) or electroslag remelting (ESR), ensuring a high level of material cleanliness and consistency. It is also valued for its processing versatility, as it can be machined, formed, and welded prior to precipitation hardening. Once heat treated, it delivers consistent strength and dimensional stability, making it a dependable choice for critical components subject to cyclic loading and pressure.
Typical applications include jet engine and aerospace components such as wheels, blades, casings, afterburner and sound suppressor parts, fuel nozzles, as well as fasteners, extrusion tooling, and other high-temperature hardware. This alloy is designated Grade or Type 660 in several specifications.
