Stainless Nitronic® 50 (XM-19)
Nitronic 50 (XM-19) is a high strength and corrosion resistant austenitic stainless steel. It has nearly double the yield strength of 304 and 316 stainless steel and has better corrosion resistance than 317L stainless steel. XM-19 remains non-magnetic even after being severely cold worked. It maintains strength at high temperatures as well as sub-zero temperatures. Nitronic 50 is a very versatile alloy and with Nitronic 50’s outstanding corrosion resistance it is an effective alloy for use in the petroleum, chemical, marine, nuclear, pulp and paper, textile, and food processing industries.
In demanding service environments, Nitronic® 50 is valued for its ability to combine high strength with excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in applications exposed to chlorides, seawater, and aggressive process fluids. This makes it a strong candidate for downhole and offshore applications, where materials must perform reliably under continuous exposure to corrosive media and pressure. Its resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking allows it to maintain integrity in conditions where standard austenitic stainless steels may be insufficient.
In addition to corrosion resistance, Nitronic® 50 offers strong wear resistance and mechanical durability, helping reduce material degradation and extend component life in applications involving friction, vibration, or cyclic loading. Its combination of toughness and resistance to galling makes it well-suited for components such as shafts, fasteners, and valve parts that require consistent performance over time. With proper processing and quality control, Nitronic® 50 provides reliable, repeatable performance in critical applications where both strength and corrosion resistance are essential.
